I took my tablet with me to the kitchen this morning. I set up a song to play while I selected tomatoes and sliced a section of an onion. As I chopped the tomatoes, I wondered why I wanted that song in particular. I had forgotten about it for years and even when I heard it again recently, I wasn’t tempted to listen to it on my own. It’s an old favourite of mine and a staple of my childhood, the song is by the American group – Atlantic Starr. The title of the song is Always.
In my last post, I wrote about dedicating December to fitfam. It’s the third of December already and exactly four weeks to my birthday, and I haven’t even started. I’ve been battling with dizzy spells secondary to anaemia, and why am I anaemic? PCOS has a lot to answer for.
So Abiodun reminded me about Majek Fashek this evening and I’m listening to him right now. I have been a hardcore fan of Majek for as long as I’ve been alive, maybe even before I was born. I have Majek songs that he’s forgotten he sang and that man has no bad song, all of them are amazing. I don’t have a favourite song of his but Mother always makes me smile. Continue reading →
I hated Fela’s music as a child, maybe hate isn’t the right word. I think it was annoyance and irritation, a strong irritation at how long the instrumental bit ran before I could hear my Fela’s voice. You see, I loved Fela. Continue reading →
Sometimes, a song is your happy place. The rhythm, flow, cadence and lyrics coalesce into a magic feather that tickles your soul and fits wings on each ventricle of your heart. Continue reading →
You cannot listen to Good or Bad by J-Martins without thinking about your brother, the one who had bought speakers when he was in secondary school. Like you, he could obsess over a song and play it relentlessly until you suck it dry. Unlike you, he would not use headphones or earphones to keep the music within your head, if he liked a song, the house had to vibrate with the strains and strums of his new favourite song. But it wasn’t Good or Bad you were looking to listen to on an afternoon that was ultimately destined to be boring. You had just finished listening to Let’s Get Serious by Jermaine Jackson and your music player segued into the Timaya and P-Square flavoured buffet of a song. Continue reading →
‘I’m sorry’ flashed on my screen, a WhatsApp notification from you.
I gripped my phone a little harder as my eyes betrayed me by forming a layer of tears. Again I was struck by how easily you get me, how it seems you fill the spaces I didn’t know were there, waiting for you. Continue reading →
I was trying to rush down my breakfast because I nearly late for work, when my brother came to stand beside me with a song I couldn’t make out, playing on his phone.
“Do you know I’m listening to the original version of Easy,” he said. “Lionel Richie wasn’t the original singer.” Continue reading →
Get lucky by Daft Punk ft Pharell is my new favourite song, I love the disco-funk fusion and the way it makes you think dancing is easy. If I didn’t know better, I’d have sworn it was by ‘Earth Wind and Fire’ or ‘The Whispers’- the smoothness of it calls them to mind. And the video! It’s so 80’s and that for me was when good music peaked and rolled over and died. I love the chorus most of all, especially the refrain ‘we’re up all night to get lucky’ that is repeated several times across the song. Continue reading →
I have missed writing for this space so darned much! These days I tend to write mostly on facebook and there’s a restraint to my writing that I do not like at all. I guess it took that for me to realise how much freedom writing here gives me, that this is the place my writing breathes and thrives and of course bubbles with richness and the essence of me.
