Birthday bants

Most of the world celebrate New Year’s day on the first of January but those of us who were born on the 31st of December, we get to celebrate our New Year a day early. 

I’m currently sitting in my dad’s car which is parked in front of a mini shopping complex in Owerri. We’re not shopping for cake as you’d expect but for a key cutter, his ignition key has been problematic and he’s getting a new one done.

 

I’ve been in the village since the 22nd of December and it hasn’t been a picnic. Seeing my grandmother and cousins and other relatives has done me a world of good but Airtel network decided to be frustrating. I didn’t realise how essential the internet has become to me until this week when I couldn’t access it. I communicate with the world via Whatsapp, get my news via Facebook and other sites and feed my ever burgeoning thirst for knowledge via Google and his girlfriend Wikipedia and most importantly keep up with the blogs I follow. I felt cut off from the rest of the world and I’m not even that into the rest of the world.

 

This year I’ve had many days when I felt like I was disconnected from humanity, an alien on this planet, it was easy to dwell on the bad days and failures, to think I could sail past the storms that beset me. Yet I’ve had beautiful days, it was easy to discount those glorious days and forget the truly awesome things that have happened this year.

I got an email from wordpress, my blog report for this year. I just read it now and it amazed me how much my blog had grown. This year’s been awesome for me in my writing life, I’ve written more this year than I’ve ever written in my whole life, I got plenty exposure too and most importantly I have met scores of awesome people this year via my writing. You know I’m talking about you and you and you.

Today, I celebrate a brand new year, my 28th (28 seems so stable and mature, I don’t feel it yet in my head or heart) I’m glad that I am alive to see this and I pray I’m here to see the next (if Jesus tarries). I want to wish all other people ( my awesome father, my darling Anthony, Sister Ngozi, Kelly) celebrating their birthday today all the best of the blessings in heaven.

For the rest of you celebrating New Year’s day tomorrow… May 2016 be glorious for all of us, may our light shine bright and may our dreams come true.
