My favourite songs // Songs I like episode 4

I’ve had several ideas about the songs I’d feature on the fourth part of this series,  in fact too many and I was really confused about the three or four to put in. This morning while I was in the shower *I don’t shower naked so halt the lascivious thoughts* I decided to put the songs I was listening to at that point in time. Yes, I sing along when I play music in the shower and Whitney Houston has nothing on my shower voice, nothing!.
The first song is Just Once by James Ingram. I’m not sure I’ve listened to the song this year but I was able to remember the lyrics very clearly. Probably because it mirrored a very short lived relationship I had in my very early twenties. We’re best friends now (weird I know) but back then it was cats and dogs.

“Just Once”

I did my best
But I guess my best wasn’t good enough
Cause here we are
Back where we were before
Seems nothin’ ever changes
We’re back to being strangers
Wondering if we ought to stay
Or head on out the door

Just once…
Can’t we figure out what we keep doin’ wrong
Why we never last for very long
What are we doin’ wrong

Just once…

Can’t we find a way to finally make it right
To make the magic last for more than just one night
If we could just get to it
I know we could break through it
(Hmm hmmmm)

I gave my all
But I think my all may have been too much
Cause Lord knows we’re not gettin’ anywhere
Seems we’re always blowin’
Whatever we’ve got goin’
And it seems at times with all we’ve got
We haven’t got a prayer

Just once…

Can’t we figure out what we keep doin’ wrong
Why the good times never last for long
Where are we goin’ wrong

Just once…

Can’t we find a way to finally make it right
To make the magic last for more than just one night
I know we could break through it
If we could just get to it

Just once

I want to understand…..
Why it always comes back to goodbye
Why
Can’t we get ourselves in hand
And admit to one another
We’re no good without each other
Take the best and make it better
Find a way to stay together

Just once…..

Can’t we find a way to finally make it right (Whoa)
Make the magic last for more than just one night
I know we could break through it
If we could just get to it
Just Once…..

Whoa oh, we can get to it
Just Once…..

This song gets me every time *sniff sniff*, I think I have a romantic side, what do you think?
The next song is an old staple, I looooooove this song (it’s pretty popular but who cares, it’s a favourite song and this is MY blog), it won the grammy for best RnB song back in 1981 *it might be a ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ question, 2 million naira question even and hopefully, the contestant will remember that he read it here*

        Just The Two of Us
I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shinin’ through

To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you some time
And I want to spend some time with you

Just the two of us, we can make it if we try
Just the two of us, just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us, you and I

We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted waters all that is
And it don’t make no flowers grow

Good things might come to those who wait
Not to those who wait too late
We got to go for all we know

Just the two of us, we can make it if we try
Just the two of us, just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us, you and I

I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew

Darling, when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I want to be the one with you

Just the two of us, we can make it if we try
Just the two of us, just the two of us
Building big castles way on high

Just the two of us, you and I
Just the two of us, let’s get together, baby
Just the two of us, we can make it
Just the two of us, we can make it
Just the two of us

I like listening to this song in the shower, this song and Billy Joel’s version of just the way you are, are my favourite shower songs.
Have you heard Will Smith’s version of this song, he did a cover of the song in the late nineties. He sang it for his son to reassure him when he was marrying Jada, that they’d always be a team. You see why I have undying love for Will! How many men would realise that their son would  need a sign that daddy’s new family won’t displace him? If only I’d been twelve years older! Jada wouldn’t have stood a chance. Look for the song, listen to it, feel mushy inside, it’s allowed.
I first heard Barry White’s version of this song on Valentine’s day 2013, I was in a store buying a valentine’s day present for myself and the song came on the radio. I was transfixed! It was practically the most beautiful song I’d ever heard, it encapsulates the kind of love we all want. Immediately I google the lyrics, and find the song, went to Wikipedia and discovered that Barry White only covered the song, it was originally written and performed by Billy Joel. I downloaded the two versions, I prefer the original version, it’s so earnest and heartfelt, though Barry didn’t change the lyrics but you know Barry! Seduction is his middle name, nuff said.

“Just The Way You Are”
Don’t go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don’t imagine you’re too familiar
And I don’t see you anymore
I would not leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I’ll take the bad times
I’ll take you just the way you are

Don’t go trying some new fashion
Don’t change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care

I don’t want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are.

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take ’till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.

I said I love you and that’s forever
And this I promise from my heart
I couldn’t love you any better
I love you just the way you are.

Funny thing is he wrote the song for his wife and she left him, after that happened whenever he performed the song, his drummer would insert the lines “she got the house, she got the car” instead of “I love you just the way you are” and that’s why my guy stopped performing the song live, maybe if you ask him nicely, he might just change his mind.
Not forgetting Bruno Mars ‘just the way you are’ it’s sappy though but if you’re in your early twenties, it would make plenty sense.
It took me almost  twelve hours to finish this post, kept getting distracted. Right now Justin Bieber’s ‘as long as you love me’ blares from my phone, wonder how it got there? Whatever happened to the sweet young boy who stole our hearts with ‘baby’ and other sundry hits? Tragic.
