I miss you like crazy

Not too long ago I was having a conversation with my friend Hero and we were talking about love songs, Hero’s such a hopeless romantic! Anyway Hero asked if I knew Unforgettable by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, I had a hazy idea of the song. Went to youtube, watched a video of the song, liked it a little and that was that.

A few weeks later, I suddenly remembered snatches of a song I watched on a tv series, the line ‘I miss you like crazy’ was probably what I could remember clearly, off to Google.com I went. Surprise Surprise! The song was by Natalie Cole too, I downloaded it and have been playing it all day. It’s a song about lost love and regrets, sadly I know what it feels like to miss someone who was good to you but you let him/her leave your life over something insignificant. Unfortunately I can’t salvage those relationships in my life but I do regret the fact that I let them walk away and I miss the H out of them.

“Miss You Like Crazy”
Even though it’s been so long
My love for you keeps going strong
I remember the things that we used to do
A kiss in the rain till the sun shine through
I tried to deny it but I’m still in love with you

I miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy
Ever since you went away, every hour of every day
I miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy
No matter what I say or do
There’s just no getting over you

I can see the love shining in your eyes
And it comes as such a sweet surprise
If seeing’s believing it’s worth the wait
So hold me and tell me it’s not too late
We’re so good together, we’re starting forever now

And I miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy
Ever since you went away, every hour of every day
I miss you like crazy, I miss you baby
A love like ours will never end
Just touch me and we’re there again
Just one night
And we’ll have that magic feeling like we used to do
Hold on tight
And whatever comes our way we’re gonna make it through

If seeing’s believing it’s worth the wait
So hold me and tell me it’s not too late
We’re so good together, we’re starting forever now

And I miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy
No matter what I say or do
There’s just no getting over you
And I miss you, baby, I miss you, baby
All the tender love you gave me
When a feeling gets this strong
You know the real thing come along

And I miss you
I miss you like crazy baby
Only your sweet love can save me
I miss you like crazy
A love like ours will never end
Just touch me and we’re there again
Miss you like crazy, I miss you like crazy

To X, Y and Z; old friends, ex boyfriends, companions of my salad days.

My favourite songs // Songs I like episode 7

Today we’ll be seeing the first nigerian song in the series, it’s by a defunct band that once was the Sino-atrial node of the nigerian music industry

Woman: Officer no worry na de food be dis
Policeman: Oya, people, people, make una go case dismissed
Repeat Chorus till fade

Styl Plus rules! Those guys had everything going for them; looks, lyrics, lovely voices! Only thing is they came too early, they’d have been the ones rocking the endorsement parades now instead of most of the guys who are making mega bucks with minuscule talent eg D’Prince. I had the hugest crush on Shifi for the longest time, always wanted to stroke his goatee. Is he still single? I wonder. I love love love the song, it’s always a pleasure to listen to. I was listening to it while cooking indomie last night and felt so fly. The production of the song is top notch. Went to youtube to watch the video of this song and after watching it, I watched Tongolo by D’Banj. I remember how blown away I was by that song, it was nice to see the video again and remember when no one knew who Don Jazzy was.

The next song an old classic, an anthem to being yourself and knowing you’re special. The song probably saved my sanity many times when I was very young. The song was inspired by a British Eccentric and gay icon Quentin Crisp, yes! I’m talking about English man in New York!

“Englishman In New York”
I don’t drink coffee I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I’m an Englishman in New York
See me walking down Fifth Avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
I’m an Englishman in New York

Oh oh
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York

If, “Manners maketh man” as someone said
Then he’s the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

Oh oh
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York

Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle’s brighter than the sun

Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run
If, “Manners maketh man” as someone said
Then he’s the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York

This song is just too much, plenty grammar plus beautiful music.

I’ve mentioned the next song by Seal several times in this series, it’s gotten a hold on me and refused to let me go.

“Crazy”
In a church by the face
He talks about the people going under
Only child know
A man decides after seventy years
That what he goes there for
Is to unlock the door
While those around him criticize and sleep

And through a fracture on that breaking wall
I see you my friend and touch your face again
Miracles will happen as we trip

But we’re never gonna survive unless
We get a little crazy
No we’re never gonna survive unless
We are a little
Cray cray crazy

Crazy are the people walking through my head
One of them got a gun to shoot the other one
And yet together they were friends at school
Get it, get it, get it, yeah!
If all were there when we first took the pill
Then maybe then maybe then maybe then maybe
Miracles will happen as we speak

But we’re never gonna survive unless
We get a little crazy
No we’re never gonna survive unless
We are a little
Crazy
No no we’ll never survive unless we get a little bit…

A man decides to go along after seventy years
Oh darling
In a sky full of people only some want to fly
Isn’t that crazy
In a world full of people only some want to fly
Isn’t that crazy
Crazy
In a heaven of people there’s only some want to fly
Ain’t that crazy
Oh babe Oh darlin’
In a world full of people there’s only some want to fly
Isn’t that crazy
Isn’t that crazy Isn’t that crazy Isn’t that crazy

Oh
But we’re never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy crazy
No we’re never gonna to survive unless we are a little crazy
But we’re never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy crazy
No we’re never gonna to survive unless we are a little crazy
No no never survive unless we get a little bit

And then you see things
The size of which you’ve never known before
They’ll break it
Someday
Only child know
Them things
The size
Of which you’ve never known before
Someday

Whew! What a song. What I love most about this series is that I’m finally learning the full lyrics of certain songs and I’m so admiring my good taste in music. Before the thought crosses your mind, let me just say it- I’m crazy.

My favourite songs // Songs I like episode 6

I haven’t walked long distance in a while, I restarted on Monday and it feels great. I normally walk with earphones plugged in and listening to my ‘walk’ play list. Today I decided to shuffle my songs and have a truly random listening experience, as I walked I was struck by the frequency of love song occurrence. I’m not the most romantic person in the world and I do not think I consciously search for love songs, I also remembered this series and the fact that ALL (except  fancy) the songs I like are love songs. To make matters worse the “love of my life” Oris *if he catch me!*, says I’m sending subliminal messages to other men in my commentaries, so I’ll just halt the love song thing before they go pour sand for my romantic garri 😉
The first song is I’m every woman by Chaka Khan, I’m such a big fan of the big C. She did one of my favourite love songs “ain’t nobody”, no I’m not putting it up. This song is sassy, upbeat and such a celebration of feminity. Whitney Houston did a cover of it and spoiled it! It sounds like a hymn. It was such a sacrilege.

“I’m Every Woman”
[Chorus:]
I’m every woman, it’s all in me
Anything you want done, baby
I’ll do it naturally
I’m every woman, it’s all in me
I can read your thoughts right now
Every one from A to Z

I can cast a spell
With secrets you can’t tell
Mix a special brew
Put fire inside of you
But anytime you feel
Danger or fear
Instantly I will appear, ’cause

[Chorus]
I can sense your needs
Like rain on to the seeds
I can make a rhyme
Of confusion in your mind
And when it comes down
To some good old fashioned love
That’s what I’ve got plenty of, ’cause

[Chorus]
I ain’t braggin’ ’cause I’m the one
You just ask me ooh and it shall be done
And don’t bother to compare
‘Cause I’ve got it
I’ve got it, I’ve got it, yeah
I’m every woman
[Repeat and fade]

Yea baby! I’ve got it and I’ll flaunt it, nuff said.
The next song is another upbeat song, used to be a party staple back in the day, whenever I think of the 80’s this song plays in my head. The song takes me back to that time when life was simple. And whoever produced this song is an out and out genius, the beat lingers in your head for a long time

Rhythm Of The Night
When it feels like the world is on your shoulders,
and all of the madness has got you going crazy.
It’s time to get out, step out into the street,
Where all of the action is right there at your feet,
well, I know a place where we can dance all night away
underneath electric stars.
Just come with me and we can shake your blues right away,
you’ll be doing fine when the music starts, oh

To the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light.
Forget about the worries on your mind, you can leave them all behind.
To the beat of the rhythm of the night,
oh, the rhythm of the night, oh yeah.

Look out on the street now, the party’s just beginning,
the music’s playing, a celebration’s starting
Under the street lights the scene is being set
A night for romance, a night you won’t forget
So, come join the fun, this ain’t no time to be staying home,
oh, there’s too much going on.
Tonight is gonna be a night like you’ve never known.
We’re gonna have a good time the whole night long.

To the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light…..
Come, join the fun, this ain’t no time to be staying home….
To the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light.
Forget about the worries on your mind, you can leave them all behind.
To the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light.
Forget about the worries on your mind.
To the beat of the rhythm of the night, oh baby, I’m crying.
Forget about the worries on your mind.
To the beat of the rhythm of the night, oh baby,
Forget about the worries on your mind.
La la la la la
The music’s playing, it’s a celebration , the music’s playing,
Everybody dance to the beat of the rhythm of the night
Forget about the worries on your mind, you can leave them all behind.
To the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light………

The next song is a legend, the man who’s shoes no one (not even Luther Vandross) has been able to fill. Yes its Marvin Gaye, and the song is his heartfelt classic “what’s going on”. He wrote the song based after hearing his brother’s experience in Vietnam. I still think it’s a crying shame that when you mention his name in Nigeria, most of us think of ‘sexual healing’. It’s a beautiful song but he deserves to be remembered for being the best RnB singer ever. Have you heard “Mercy me- the ecology”? Or any of his soulful duets? Please look for them and listen to them. Speaking of duets, his duet with Kim Weston ‘it takes two’  was used in the famous and old squadron dry gin commercial. I heard the commercial first, when I listen to the song my head always inserts “squadron and you”.

“What’s Going On”
Mother, mother
There’s too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today – Ya

Father, father
We don’t need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don’t punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what’s going on
What’s going on
Ya, what’s going on
Ah, what’s going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we’re wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don’t punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What’s going on
Ya, what’s going on
Tell me what’s going on
I’ll tell you what’s going on – Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

My favourite songs // Songs I like episode 5b

A friend asked me to put up the lyrics of The sweetest taboo, since I’m a very nice person and can’t say no to him- he’s that fantastic. I’d put it here as well as other Sade songs I like

“The Sweetest Taboo”
If I tell you
If I tell you now
Will you keep on
Will you keep on loving me
If I tell you
If I tell you how I feel
Will you keep bringing out the best in me
You give me, you give me the sweetest taboo
You give me, you’re giving me the sweetest taboo
Too good for me

There’s a quiet storm
And it never felt like this before
There’s a quiet storm
That is you
There’s a quiet storm
And it never felt this hot before
Giving me something that’s taboo
(Sometimes I think you’re just too good for me)

You give me the sweetest taboo
That’s why I’m in love with you
You give me the sweetest taboo
Sometimes I think you’re just too good for me

I’d do anything for you, I’d stand out in the rain
Anything you want me to do, don’t let it slip away

There’s a quiet storm
And it never felt like this before
There’a a quiet storm
I think it’s you
There’a a quiet storm
And I never felt this hot before
Giving me something that’s taboo

You give me the sweetest taboo
That’s why I’m in love with you
You give me, you’re giving me the sweetest taboo
Too good for me

You’ve got the biggest heart
Sometimes I think you’re just too good for me
Every day is Christmas, and every night is new years eve

Will you keep on loving me
Will you keep on, will you keep on
Bringing out the best in me

I once saw an article on baby making songs -the article said baby making not sex, I’m not trying to be prudish. This song was in the top three, it’s so smooth and soulful that it should have been number one. What do you think the song is talking about? Went to Google and saw so many bizarre theories. Human beings and their imagination! Would I like to feel this way about anyone? As romantic as the song sounds, I wouldn’t want to feel like my significant other is too good for me. I’ve worked too hard to get to the point where I believe I’m good enough to get what I want, I can’t undo that hard work. Funny enough, yesterday I was accused of being too full of myself by someone  who has been actively getting on my wrong side for years. Will probably fictionalise the experience soon and put up a sizzling story here.
I’d modify the lyrics from ‘too good for me’ to ‘good enough for you’ and maybe one day we’ll find that sweetest taboo in each other- you know who you are 😉
The next song is my favourite Sade Adu song, everything about the song I like. The lyrics bring to mind bad boys and why girls like them, and the guy in this song is the baddest!

“Smooth Operator”
He’s laughing with another girl
And playing with another heart
Placing high stakes, making hearts ache
He’s loved in seven languages
Jewel box life diamond nights and ruby lights, high in the sky
Heaven help him, when he falls

Diamond life, lover boy
He move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy
City lights and business nights
When you require streetcar desire for higher heights
No place for beginners or sensitive hearts
When sentiment is left to chance
No place to be ending but somewhere to start

No need to ask
He’s a smooth operator
Smooth operator, smooth operator
Smooth operator
Coast to coast, LA to Chicago, western male
Across the north and south, to Key Largo, love for sale

Face to face, each classic case
We shadow box and double cross
Yet need the chase
A license to love, insurance to hold
Melts all your memories and change into gold
His eyes are like angels but his heart is cold

No need to ask
He’s a smooth operator
Smooth operator, smooth operator
Smooth operator
Coast to coast, LA to Chicago, western male
Across the north and south, to Key Largo, love for sale

Smooth operator, smooth operator
Smooth operator, smooth operator
Smooth operator, smooth operator
Smooth operator, smooth operator
Smooth operator, smooth operator

You know he’s bad for you but you can’t resist, the story has been repeated around the world but the female heart will keep tripping for the bad boys, a trifle sad. Sade knows a lot about dysfunctional love, the next song is one of her signature songs. Another song about love that the woman feels too grateful for, while I believe love is a huge miracle and no one really deserves it, but if you’re in a relationship with someone and he/she doesn’t let you know they find you amazing even with your plenty flaws and quirks and you don’t think the same of them. I think you should think long and hard about it- my thoughts.

“No Ordinary Love”
I gave you all the love I got
I gave you more than I could give
I gave you love
I gave you all that I have inside
And you took my love
You took my love
Didn’t I tell you
What I believe
Did somebody say that
A love like that won’t last
Didn’t I give you
All that I’ve got to give baby

I gave you all the love I got
I gave you more than I could give
I gave you love
I gave you all that I have inside
And you took my love
You took my love

I keep crying
I keep trying for you
There’s nothing like you and I baby

This is no ordinary love
No ordinary Love
This is no ordinary love
No ordinary Love

When you came my way
You brightened every day
With your sweet smile

Didn’t I tell you
What I believe
Did somebody say that
A love like that won’t last
Didn’t I give you
All that I’ve got to give baby

This is no ordinary love
No ordinary Love
This is no ordinary love
No ordinary Love

I keep crying
I keep trying for you
There’s nothing like you and I baby

This is no ordinary love
No ordinary Love
This is no ordinary love
No ordinary Love

Keep trying for you
Keep crying for you
Keep flying for you
Keep flying I’m falling
I’m falling

Keep trying for you
Keep crying for you
Keep flying for you
Keep flying for you I’m falling
I’m falling

Notice how she didn’t mention he gave her love, just referenced his smile. Ok I know I’m cynical but sometimes the signs are there and we choose to ignore them. Maybe when I fall in love, I won’t feel this way. I’d be all mushy brained and all, maybe not.

Catch up

My cousin came visiting this weekend, it’s always a pleasure to have the lad around. He’s funny, interesting and dependable. We’ve spent the weekend downloading series and catching up on old gist.

On Saturday I decided to make cupcakes, after going to the market to replenish my flour, butter and sugar supplies I was too tired to bake. Sunday rolled in and I made the cupcakes in the afternoon. I decided to use all the flavour essence I had at home and see how they taste. I’d bought some pretty strange stuff and couldn’t fathom how to use them. I have vanilla, banana, coconut, pineapple, butterscotch, lemon, condensed milk, strawberry and peppermint, I didn’t use the peppermint today, I couldn’t find it when I was baking, found it much later. The cupcakes turned out pretty well, my cousin loved the strawberry cupcakes. I don’t know how I forgot to take pictures of the cupcakes

I decided to start writing short stories but I’m not featuring them here. I feel there’s already so much going on here, so I’m putting them on my blog on blogger.

I’ve done two stories already,  you can find them here and here.
Ever since I did my last favorite songs post, I haven’t been able to stop listening to Crazy by Seal, does anyone know a song exorcist?

My favourite songs // Songs I like episode 5

Maybe I should rename this series the love songs series, I’m featuring more of love songs, please note that I’m not going to feature any gospel song on this series after all can salt water and fresh water flow from one source? Mba.
Today I’m putting up Luther Vandross’s So Amazing, it’s an amazing song! While the lyrics are little unrealistic, unless the love is less than a month old, that person you love would have made you sad, little wonder one of the qualities of love is endurance; ‘love endures all things’. I’m a huge Luther Vandross fan, will have to write a post on him soon, his voice always reminds me of a cold mixture of malta Guinness and peak evaporated milk on a hot day or a sleepless night *will knock you out* (them no pay me for product placement sef). While ‘dance with my father’ is probably his best known song, my guy had so many classics. As I type; ‘love the one you’re with’ is playing on my note, the song is so upbeat! ‘If I didn’t know better’ is my personal favorite, I like the honesty and no dramaesque tones of the song, and of course his delicious vocals. Before I get sidetracked by my love for Luther and go into full scale L-adoration, here are the lyrics to So Amazing.

“So Amazing”
Love has truly been good to me
Not even one sad day
Or minute have I had since you’ve come my way
I hope you know I’d gladly go
Anywhere you’d take me

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above
Ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…I’d go

Got to tell you how you thrill me
I’m happy as I can be
You have come and it’s changed my whole world
Bye-bye sadness, hello mellow
What a wonderful day

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above
Ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…I’d go

And it’s so amazing, amazing
I could stay forever, forever
Here in love and no, leave you never
‘Cause we’ve got amazing love

Truly it’s so amazing, amazing
Love brought us together, together
I will leave you never and never
I guess we’ve got amazing love

Ooh, so amazing and I’ve been waiting
For a love like you

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above
Oh, and it’s so, it’s so

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above
And you know, it’s so

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above
Hey…hey…hey…yeah…it’s so

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above
Hey…hey…yeah…hey…yeah…yeah…hey…it’s so

It’s so amazing to be loved
I’d follow you to the moon in the sky above

Nobody does soul and RnB like Luther Vandross, nobody!
The next song is by Carlos Santana with vocals by Seal, it’s a beautiful song, lyrics totally on point. When I was in secondary school, my classmate and friend was always singing the song, the guy (her brother’s friend) she was crushing on at the time liked the song. Right now it’s one of my favourite songs ever, its lyrics resonate with me and it gives me a connection to her, she left this cruel world in 2007.

“You Are My Kind”
(feat. Seal)
Stay with me baby
And that’s all I ask of you
And I know that someday
You won’t remember
The way that this moment feels to you
Don’t let it go
Don’t turn your back on what you think you know
You never know you know
Don’t leave it alone
Cause I need you to cling to

[Chorus:]
Cause you are my kind
You’re all that I want
Here in this life
Until we are gone
Our breath and our skin
Our hearts and our minds
They’re one and the same
You are my kind

Well call on me baby
If you should ever need someone
To help get your head straight
I’ll be your resident all night
Sure am glad just having you around
Well all that I know
When you find love you never let it go
You never know you know
Without you I’m lost
I get scattered
I’m shattered

[Chorus:]
Cause you are my kind
You’re all that I want
Here in this life
Until we are gone
Our breath and our skin
Our hearts and our minds
They’re one and the same
Cause you are my kind
We’re one and the same
You are my kind

Don’t let it go
Don’t turn your back on what you think you know
You never know you know
Don’t leave it alone
Cause I need you to cling to

[Chorus:]
Cause you are my kind
You’re all that I want
Here in this life
Until we are gone
Our breath and our skin
Our hearts and our minds
They’re one and the same
Cause you are my kind

[Bridge]
Our love and our life
My heart and my soul
I need you tonight
Your love makes me whole
And it’s all I can stand
Until you come home
I need you tonight
Cause you are my kind
I need you tonight
Cause you are my kind

Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh you are my kind
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh you are my kind

In 1996, the hosts of the ultimate morning show on Raypower 100.5 were crazy about ‘kiss from a rose’ and used to play it practically every morning at about 6:30, loved the song then, didn’t even know it won accolades, love the bladdy song even more now but I think Seal’s best song is Crazy! That is a song!
As I type this, one of my friends is in Freedom Park for Afropolitan vibes and having a blast and sending pictures despite knowing I really want to be there but can’t be there because of unassailable reasons. Should I send a guided missile to annihilate this said friend?
